Thujone hysteria
What's about thujone and its rumored psychoactive
qualities?
There is no LSD-like delirious state caused by absinthe.
But an absinthe inebriation is often
described as more clear and awake. Many absinthe drinkers
tell about it, but there is no scientific evidence.
Individual disposition, autosuggestion and placebo effect
are supposably an issue. Maybe the combination of all
ingredients together is somehow effective and not a singular
substance. At last absinthe contains up to two dozens of
different herbs, each with an individual effect on humans.
Many of them are known as medicinal herbs for thousands of
years.
Current researches state that the thujone contents of historic
absinthes was not higher than in our days. However few samples
should represent the whole rich absinthe culture of the 19th
century. Maybe the clients of that study who are in part big
players in the absinthe business, have an eye on the awaking US
market where the thujone contents is limited to 10mg/kg.
Absinthe or Absinth ?
In the German speaking area and in the Czech Republic, this
wormwood spirit is spelled Absinth. In French and
English it is called absinthe. Sometimes
absinth is used as a synonym for macerated, anise-free
wormwood liquor of German and Czech origin (Bohemian absinthe
culture). On the other hand absinthe often stands for a high
anise contents in a wormwood distillate of French or Swiss
origin and for original authenticity by pure distillation of
herbs.
As the Spanish call their absinthe absenta, the
Polish call it absynth, and there are many other forms
of spelling around the world, for the sake of simplicity we
will here use the official english word absinthe.
Absinthe herbs
The absinthe-typical herbs that define the flavour are
wormwood, anise and fennel. Also common are star anise, hyssop,
lemon balm, roman wormwood, garden angelica, veronica,
coriander, juniper, calamus, origanum dictamnus, nutmeg and
others. The green colour accrues from the chlorophyll of
pontica, hyssop, melissa and mint.
