„Absinthe allegedly was invented in 1792 as the elixir of Pierre Ordinaire, a French doctor. The popularity of absinthe grew in the year 1840, when during their North African campaigns the French army prescribed absinthe for their soldiers, which continued to enjoy their cherished drink back in their homeland. So absinthe evolved to the society drink of the 19th century. Especially artists and writers like Maupassant, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Gauguin, van Gogh, Manet, Baudelaire, were inspired by absinthe.

Naming of absinthe is Artemisia absinthium, Latin for wormwood as one of the main ingredients of this drink. Wormwood contains thujone, which has psychoactive properties, which is why it was banned in 1923 by the absinthe law in Germany. Since the prohibition against the use of thujone containing plants was repealed in 1998, it is allowed again to produce absinthe.
